Quick Guide to Marine Weather Forecast Terms www.coastalsafety.com
Weather describes the state of the atmosphere at a given time.
Weather can be described in terms of temperature, precipitation (snow, rain and hail), wind speed and direction, visibility and amount of clouds.
Climate describes the average weather of a particular part of the world at different times of the year. In Britain we expect cool summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall throughout the year.
Rain, snow, hail and fog. Precipitation is measured in a rain gauge. Some rain gauges automatically record precipitation while others are emptied daily by an observer.
Both wind direction and strength are measured. A weather vane measures direction. An anemometer records the force. Wind force can also be measured using the Beaufort scale.
Good weather is produced by high pressure
High pressure forms anticyclones
Air flows and prevents rain clouds from forming
Anticyclones cause heat waves in summer and freezing/foggy mornings in winter
