When streaming first appeared, it seemed to come with a promise: the movies and TV you love, ad-free, for a price much cheaper than cable.

Less than 20 years later, it seems that this promise has not been kept. Streaming is more expensive than ever and prices continue to rise. Password sharing has been cracked down, forcing more of us to pay to stream. And against the backdrop of all this, advertising is making a comeback, thanks to the rise of cheaper, ad-supported subscription tiers.

As a consumer, this seems infuriating. But we are not entirely at the mercy of these companies. So why is all this happening? And what can we do to avoid breaking the bank while still enjoying our favorite shows?
