Physicist Alex Sushkov explains why scientists think dark matter must exist.

In his laboratory, Sushkov uses atoms as miniature compass needles to search for dark matter. Researchers have long used magnetic resonance to spy inside bodies and identify chemicals, but Sushkov has pushed the technology to its limits. In his laboratory at Boston University, Sushkov developed one of the most focused magnetic resonance experiments to date, aimed at detecting a hypothetical dark matter particle called an axion.
