Performance reviews have a few steps – and you want your self-evaluation to continue even when you're not there!

In our previous corporate jobs from 9-17, we had a very defined process for performance reviews, starting with the self-assessment done with your manager, then that manager meeting with other managers in the department as a whole to compare yourself to everyone else at your level. . After that, your raises, bonuses, and other performance review results are based on your situation.

Your self-assessment carries a lot of weight throughout the process, even if you're only present at step 1, because that's what your boss will base their conversation on (especially if you've been honest and focused on the data in your assessment).

For this reason, you should ideally present the information to your boss in a way that he or she can take it with them and refer to it easily while discussing your performance. We've shared an example slideshow in this video, but there may be a different format that's more preferable at your company or boss.

Good luck with your performance reviews this year!
