From their differences in size to the impact they could have on Earth, join us as we explore the question "What is the difference between comets, asteroids, meteoroids, meteors and meteorites?"
/"Lots of stones!/"
After hearing names like comets, asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites, you're probably thinking, "That's a lot of names for what are essentially space rocks!/" And honestly, you're not wrong. It feels like a lot of names are being thrown around for what is honestly just great, but you have to think about it in a broader perspective. Because just like there aren't any "regular planets" out there, or not all stars are just one type, all of these rocks serve a purpose when it comes to their names. Even if it doesn't seem like it at first, it's okay if you think about it, because most of the time we don't need to know or care about these things. But when it comes to seeing our universe, we need to differentiate them.
Let's start at the beginning of everything, shall we? Once upon a time all these space rocks didn't exist. Whether you believe in a God or the Big Bang, the universe had nothing at the beginning, and then, the "creation wave" was born. For this video, we'll look at things from the perspective of the Big Bang. Afterwards, the wave of energy and mass spread throughout the universe. Then the gravity of various things like stars began to pull things together into tighter and tighter masses. This is how the planets were formed. But for things that didn't become planets, they became things like comets, asteroids, meteoroids, meteors, and meteorites.
Which means that even though these names may seem superfluous, that doesn't mean they don't have impact. And in fact, each of these rocks has an impact, whether you admit it or not. So, let's dive into them and see what makes them so different and special.
So how about we start with the most important of the group, the asteroids!
