Look at these pictures, they are asteroids and comets.
You've heard about asteroids and comets a lot, but… Do you know what they are? Can you tell them apart?

Asteroids and comets are rocky, frozen remains that have been around since the formation of the solar system. When they're close to our planet, we can see them for all to see. And some of them are beautiful, like this comet.

Asteroids and comets differ in composition and size.

Asteroids are usually larger than comets and are made of rock and metal, so the heat of the sun doesn't affect them much. Also, asteroids don't have tails, remember that!

Comets are made of ice, rock, dust, and organic compounds. They are known for their very long tails. The most famous is Halley's Comet, which can be observed from Earth about every 75 years. Although observed from the surface of our planet, it seems gigantic and its tail could measure millions of kilometers, Halley's Comet is very small, measuring 15 km long and 8 km wide. In addition, it is shaped like a peanut. The universe is so cool, isn't it?
