Dark oxygen is a term used to describe increased oxygen and oxygenation in the deepest oceans. Until recently, scientists believed that only processes such as photosynthesis could create oxygen. However, with the discovery of increased oxygen levels well below those that sunlight can reach, it was determined that this increase in oxygen was the result of a ROCK! Specifically, a rock-like metal nodule that gives off an electric current and acts as a "battery". This creates electrolysis and splits the water molecules in the salt water into their components, hydrogen and oxygen. This is thought to be the cause of increased oxygen at the ocean floor, which allows much of the deep sea life to flourish where there is no light for plants photosynthesize and create oxygen. We live on a vibrant and beautiful planet. Who knew rocks and minerals could also create oxygen? Science is so cool! What a geological marvel!
