But a recent revolutionary discovery changed everything, amplifying all potentials – Crispr gene editing – Scientists have discovered a very special protein in the antiviral defense system of bacteria called Cas-9. This acts like a pair of “molecular scissors” capable of cutting both strands of DNA at a specific location in the genome. Scientists can then use the DNA repair machinery to introduce changes to one or more genes in the genome of a cell of interest. They adapted this system so that it could be used in other animal cells, including mice and humans. The protein is very precise and versatile. Although first-generation CRISPR-based treatments are still in their early stages, the next generation of this technology holds unimaginable potential.
