The habitable zone of a planet is the distance from a star that allows liquid water to persist on its surface if the planet has a suitable atmosphere.

Earth is comfortably located in the Sun's habitable zone in our solar system. Venus is near the inner limit, while Mars is near the outer limit.

The area is further away for larger, hotter stars; for smaller, cooler stars, it can be very close indeed. One of the keys to discovering signs of life is finding those “perfect” planets in the habitable zone.

Astronomy studies the planets, solar system, galaxies, stars, nebulae, comets, asteroids, black holes, quasars and meteors among many objects in the universe or cosmos. In the same way, cosmology studies the birth, existence and end of the universe. astrophysics uses the laws of physics and chemistry to study the cosmos and how we adapt to it.
