By definition, 2-factor authentication is a method by which an institution, website, social media platform, or other application verifies your identity beyond the first step of using your password.

Two-factor authentication (also abbreviated as 2FA) is an extra layer of security to ensure that even if someone steals or cracks your password, they still won't be able to log into your banking, email, or any other account.

There are three main methods for performing 2-factor authentication:

1) Text Message: You can set up the account with your phone number so that every time you want to log in, you receive a text message code that you enter to verify your identity.

2) Authenticator App: You can set up an app like Google Authenticator that will provide a new code every 15 seconds that you enter to give access to your account.

3) Security Key: The final and most secure way to implement 2-factor authentication is to use a security key. This key must be plugged into your device in order to connect to an account, verifying that you are the person who has the right to connect to this account.

Whichever 2FA method you choose, it's important that you use one for your most important online connections like banking, investing, email, and maybe even social media.
