In the world we live in today, we hear a lot of advice about what to do to stay healthy, but maintaining or improving your health doesn't happen with a magic pill. Did you know that what you do or don't do regularly has a huge impact on your overall health? 80% of chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes and heart disease can be prevented by following these 5 simple steps.

Step One: Maintain a Healthy BMI
Maintaining your BMI or body mass index goes way beyond looking good on the beach. Maintaining a healthy weight reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, gallbladder disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Additionally, overweight people have more disease-related complications than people at a healthy weight…so it's best to keep your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 for optimal health.

Second step: avoid tobacco
These days…this one seems like a no-brainer. More than two hundred million Americans choose a smoke-free lifestyle! If you don't use tobacco…congratulations, but remember to avoid second-hand smoke, as it is also known to cause cancer. If you smoke or use other forms of tobacco, it's never too late… watch our How to Quit Smoking video in the description below.

Step Three: Move Move Move
Did you know that 60% of American adults don't get enough regular physical activity? Just 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity, 5 days a week, can significantly reduce your risk of many chronic diseases, including obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and even certain types of cancer. Getting started isn't as difficult as you might think. You don't need to become a gym enthusiast to enjoy the health benefits of physical activity. Simply start by walking 30 minutes a day and gradually increase your physical activity over time to benefit even more!

Step Four: Eat Your Fruits and Vegetables
Eating the right foods is a struggle for many of us…however, eating at least five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day is probably one of the best things you can do to help prevent many chronic diseases and can even help reverse certain conditions. you may have already done so. If you're short on fruits and vegetables, make it easier by preparing several servings to take with you each day. You're more likely to eat it…if it's already in front of you!

Step Five: Get Your ZZZZs
Getting 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night is increasingly recognized as an essential aspect of chronic disease prevention. Consuming enough ZZZZ may help reduce your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, obesity, depression and even cancer. If you're having trouble falling and staying asleep, be sure to watch our How to Improve Your Sleep… video in the description below.
