Today, more and more of us are buying smart speakers with an intelligent voice assistant. Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Google Home, and Apple’s HomePod are all smart devices that we use to control our homes and play music.

With the increase in APIs available to developers, companies are working hard to build their own apps on these smart speakers. Here are some tips for intelligent and natural voice interactions.

First, don’t let the smart assistant respond too quickly or too slowly. Some people think that the faster an assistant answers your question, the better the system is. Unfortunately, this is a misconception, because if you let a smart assistant respond too quickly, the user can feel rushed and pressured. Researchers have found that the optimal response time should be between 500 ms and 1250 ms.

Second, a smart assistant should talk less and do more. Give it a concise answer. If your assistant can express confirmation or doubt in one word, do it. Third, diversify the conversation. Try to think of as many answers as possible, so that your users can feel that the assistant is alive and friendly.

Last but not least, you'll need to make sure that your voice assistant has an error correction mechanism that brings the conversation back to normal when your user produces something the system doesn't understand.

I hope this was helpful.
