Agitation is an acute behavioral emergency requiring immediate intervention. In this simulation, Scott Zeller, MD demonstrates verbal de-escalation. De-escalation is very effective and has been identified as the preferred intervention for calming an agitated person. This technique is also essential to avoid isolation and restraint, which can be traumatic for both patients and staff. The goal of verbal de-escalation is to help the person regain control so they can better communicate their needs to health care providers.
