Cinematic Lighting Techniques Explained

This episode of the Shot List series covers part one of the basics of cinematic lighting. This includes fundamentals like types of light, qualities of light, essential terminology and necessary equipment, plus everything you need to know before lighting your first scene. In part two, we'll look at how to light unique subjects, backgrounds, and scenarios.

Cinematic lighting is something that all filmmakers strive for. Learning how to light a scene, an interview, a video clip, etc. is almost always learning how to achieve “cinematic lighting”. And while cinematography in general can be intimidating, especially lighting, our goal here is to lay the foundation so you can get on set where the real learning takes place.

Cinematic lighting techniques start with knowing the different types of light and their different qualities. You need to know the difference between natural and artificial light and how to best use them. Hard light hits the subject directly, creating sharp, distinct shadows, while soft light is diffused and scattered, creating soft, indistinct shadows.

Be aware that ambient light includes any light available in a location that the crew did not bring and that practical lights are all sources visible in the photo. Purposeful lighting means there is a justified reason for the way you light a scene. For example, if a firelight is seen illuminating the subject, there must obviously be a fireplace in the room.

Another major task of cinematic lighting techniques is light control. Flags and barn doors block and shape light, while diffusing materials like silks and reflectors change the quality of light from harsh to soft.

The techniques and concepts behind cinematic lighting are actually quite simple. And once you've mastered the essential elements, that's when creativity kicks in to make them your own.
