This video discusses the types, causes and solutions to addiction. Learn the difference between truly loving something and being addicted to it. Learn why people become addicted and the best strategies for overcoming an addiction.

The reality of addiction is no joke! An addiction can be to a substance or a behavior. The difference between truly loving something and being addicted is obsessive thoughts, feeling like you can't stop, and continuing to use or engage in that substance or behavior despite the negative consequences.

An example might be playing video games so much that you start losing sleep and having difficulty in school. Such addictions can make you unusually irritable and cause you to abandon responsibilities, such as going to school.

A good way to overcome your addiction is to talk to a counselor. You may not want to do this at first, but it can help you improve! You can see improvements in your life when you find balance in your life and reconnect with those around you!

How do people become addicted? Sometimes a person begins using a substance or behavior to fit in. Other times, it is to relieve pain caused by traumatic experiences or mental health issues. Our brains also release “feel good” chemicals called dopamine when we do something that feels good or is exciting. This same pleasure pathway is activated when we use drugs or alcohol. Over time our brain gets used to having this in our life and it is very difficult to stop.

If you feel like you're addicted to something, you're not alone! Counselors can help you get your brain back from the hijacking!
