To troubleshoot a dead computer with no power, you must first start checking the electrical components going into the PC, like the main power plug and AC power cord. You should also check the front power button. If not repaired, check the power supply (SMPS). In this tutorial, I show you how to do it all, from basic to average troubleshooting.

Disclaimer. Any electronic or electrical repair carries a risk of damage to self, others and the equipment. This tutorial is a guide for educational purposes only, so you do it at your own risk. If in doubt, consult a professional computer technician.

This video is just one possible way to troubleshoot and repair a computer. I have created a dedicated series to help troubleshoot the 10 major components of a computer in a logical structure, click the link. 01:37 Start of the topic of diagnosis and repair

In this video tutorial, I'll show you the diagnostic tests to perform when a computer won't turn on.

You must follow a logical troubleshooting elimination process. This starts by checking that the wall outlet is working properly. Next, check the power cord coming from the wall outlet and the power supply. You can do this either by using a multimeter such as this one:

You can also plug the power cord into another device to test.

For this video the last test is the power supply. This can be tested in two ways. First, take another known working power supply, install it on the desktop and test how it works.

If you cannot find a different power supply, unplug the 204-pin and 4-pin CPU from the motherboard and any other power cables. Use a thin metal wire such as a paper clip and bend it into a U shape.

With the power off and unplugged, insert one end of the metal prong into a green slot and the other end into any black slot. Do not touch the pin further, plug the power cord into the power supply and turn on the switch. If the fan is spinning, the power supply is working.

Please note at this point that this test will only confirm the power entering the PSU and not the correct voltage; that is, the PSU may still be damaged and not power the desktop properly.
