— Looking for Debby —

As of the last advisory, we now have Tropical Storm Debby in the Gulf of Mexico. The storm will move north into the eastern Gulf of Mexico before making landfall near the Big Bend area of Florida Sunday evening or Monday morning. Debby is expected to become a hurricane before making landfall, and hurricane warnings have been issued.

KEY MESSAGES:

– Any direct impacts from this storm will occur well east of the FOX10 viewing area. Our local concern is rough waves late this weekend and early next week.
– This storm is expected to move slowly over Florida and coastal areas of the Southeast this weekend and next week, causing heavy rain and flooding.
– Storm surge is expected along the Florida Gulf Coast east of Indian Pass, Florida. Storm surge watches and warnings have been issued, with waves of 3 to 5 feet expected in some areas.
– Debby is expected to become a hurricane before landfall, bringing hurricane-force winds to parts of Florida's Gulf Coast and Big Bend areas. Residents should closely monitor the forecast and prepare for hurricane conditions. Hurricane warnings were issued.

STORM TIMELINE:

Tropical Storm Debby will continue to move northwest and then north tonight and tomorrow. The National Hurricane Center forecasts the storm to be located about 100 miles off the coast of Tampa, Florida, Sunday afternoon/evening. The storm is then expected to approach Florida's Big Bend Sunday evening and make landfall Monday morning.

At this point, the steering currents around the storm weaken, causing forward motion to significantly slow. This system will gradually move across Florida Monday and Tuesday, eventually emerging over the Atlantic Ocean. The system could stall in this area, causing prolonged heavy rain and flooding. Further guidance will be issued as new information and forecast models become available.

NICHOLAS HERBOSO, FOX10 METEOROLOGIST:

Nicholas Herboso is the newest member of the FOX10 StormTracker team. He comes to FOX10 from the University of South Alabama, where he studied broadcast meteorology and majored in music. Nicholas is a native of Fairhope, AL, and is a proud Gulf Coast resident. He was motivated to pursue a career in weather broadcasting after experiencing several Gulf Coast hurricanes and watching news coverage of local meteorologists like John Edd Thompson, particularly after watching their coverage of the 2004 and 2005 hurricane seasons. Past extreme weather events inspired Nicholas to become interested in weather early on. For him, weather is a passion that he can't wait to share with viewers.
