Let me explain…
When I first started landscape photography, I loved my wide angle lens. I shot EVERY scene with it. A wider lens (20mm or wider) is great when you have an incredible sunset, light streaming through your scene, and incredible conditions. Unfortunately, you will not encounter such conditions often.
When the sky is blue and boring, your wide-angle lens will give you images that lack that intriguing element. As I've grown as a photographer, I've learned to shoot primarily with a telephoto lens (I still like my wide angle when I have the right conditions). With a telephoto lens, you can zoom in and cut out some of the less interesting details in your scene, helping you focus on a more interesting subject or light and get an intimate view of the scene.
By owning a telephoto lens, you can find more unique compositions in seemingly boring photographic conditions.
If you're new to landscape photography and don't already own a telephoto lens, I recommend starting with a 70-300mm, which gives you a wide range for more intimate or abstract shots.
