Thermodynamics is a branch of physics that deals with heat, work, and temperature, and their relationship to energy, radiation, and the physical properties of matter. In physics, internal energy (U) is defined as the total energy of a closed system. In thermodynamics, an adiabatic process is a type of thermodynamic process that occurs without heat or mass transfer between the system and its surroundings. Unlike an isothermal process, an adiabatic process transfers energy to the environment only in the form of work. The first law of thermodynamics is a version of the law of conservation of energy, adapted to thermodynamic processes, distinguishing two types of energy transfer, in the form of heat and thermodynamic work, and relating them to a function of the state of a body, called internal energy. .

The law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system is constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another, but cannot be created or destroyed.
