Hospitals need accurate data to operate efficiently. Even the simplest data, for example the number of lives covered in each contract, is a good starting point. But hospitals also need to quantify how much money is flowing under each contract and how much of it is variable. Full risk agreements are easier to quantify, fee-for-service contracts are adjusted based on your hospital's results. This is more difficult to assess without precise data.

Actual costs can be found in the item details. Manually analyzing each line item in a report takes time and resources. Yet we expect healthcare leaders to wholeheartedly take decisive action based on these reports. These decisions affect thousands of patients and employees, as well as millions of dollars in expenses. Decisions must be based on solid foundations and precise data. This data is found in the line details of your reports and invoices.

Data analysts provide a high return on investment for health systems. Data analysts can influence the direction of your organization. High-performance hospitals rely on data, which powers the critical decisions healthcare leaders make about patient care. This data is generated by analysts and affects millions of dollars of spending. For hospitals thinking about the ROI of a data analyst, I encourage them to look at it from this perspective.

Every healthcare system needs full visibility into its costs. All hospitals are trying to bend the cost curve to provide better patient care at lower cost. This inevitably means that cost targets will be reduced each year, but the question for most hospitals is: are these targets achievable, or even reasonable? A good analyst will answer these questions. Forgetting to answer it would be a mistake.
