What is dark matter?
Dark matter is an invisible and mysterious substance that makes up about 85% of the matter in the universe. It does not emit, absorb or reflect light, making it impossible to detect using traditional telescopes. Scientists can only infer its existence from its gravitational effects on visible matter.
Dark matter is thought to be the "glue" that holds galaxies together. Without dark matter, the outer stars of a galaxy would fly away into space due to the centrifugal force created by the galaxy's rotation. Scientists estimate that a typical galaxy contains about six times more dark matter than visible matter.
So what is dark matter made of? That’s the million dollar question. Scientists haven’t figured out what it is yet, but they have a few theories. One is that dark matter is made of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), hypothetical particles that only interact with ordinary matter through gravity and the weak force. Another theory suggests that dark matter is made of axions, a theoretical particle that has yet to be detected.
The search for dark matter has been going on for several decades. Scientists have developed sophisticated experiments to detect dark matter particles, but so far, they have not been successful. However, they are not giving up. The search for dark matter continues and we may soon discover its true nature.
