/"New cars are too expensive/" I hear it all the time… But… When it comes time to buy, what do people do? They're buying an expensive car, and it's sad because there are great cheap cars out there like this Nissan Versa we bought for a week. This is a good “honest” ride that has a new car warranty and the all-in price will be well under $25,000. It wasn't long ago that America loved cars like this, and Nissan sold more than 140,000 Versas in 2015. Last year? 24,000.

$17,820 (including destination) will get you a base model with manual transmission, air conditioning, autonomous emergency braking, and pedestrian detection. But more importantly, it will also give you a 3/36 warranty and a 5/60 powertrain warranty as well as lower financing rates than a used car. This SR version with all the bells and whistles costs just $22,225.

Why not just get a used Honda Civic, you ask? Well, mainly because a 2021 Civic at a dealership can easily cost almost $20,000 even if it has no warranty and has almost 100,000 miles on the odometer. Is the Civic better? It depends on how you define /"better/"…

The Versa is not only cheap to buy, it is also consistently ranked as one of the cheapest new cars to own over 5 years. Edmund's TCO score indicates that over 5 years, the Versa should cost less to own than a used Civic, Corolla, or Elantra, *EVEN*, including the additional depreciation of a new car. How? Because repairs and maintenance will be significantly lower. Yes, cheap is just like cheap.
This isn't unique to the Versa or Nissan. What's cheaper to keep than a used Pilot? A new Honda HR-V. Likewise, a Corolla Cross should be less expensive in the long term than a RAV4, even if it is lightly used.

What do you all think? Is the Versa the ultimate starter car? The accomplished commuter? Best bet for your student who you know is going to come out snotty?
