Background
The world is now halfway to 2030, the year in which the global community has committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a universal call to action to end poverty, protect planet and guarantee peace and prosperity for all. However, the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition shows that most of the SDGs are moderately or seriously behind schedule. Cascading and escalating crises have derailed early favorable trends in SDG implementation. Current trends show that the SDGs are under threat, with millions of people facing hunger, extreme poverty, learning losses and retracted gender equality, among others, while grappling with a climate emergency. In this special edition of the SDG report, the Secretary-General presents five major recommendations, aimed at acting as a rescue plan for people and the planet. These recommendations constitute an urgent call to action to accelerate implementation and put the world on track to achieve the SDGs by 2030.
At the High-Level Political Forum, the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) will host a high-level event to launch the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023: Special Edition, https://unstats.un. org/sdgs/report/2023/The-Sustainable-Development-Goals-Report-2023.pdf. In addition to policy recommendations, the report tells the story of SDG progress using graphs, infographics and maps and presents an in-depth analysis of selected indicators. It is prepared by UN DESA with contributions from more than 50 international and regional organizations. Apart from global trends, this report also highlights regional progress and analysis. A visually appealing format is used in this report to ensure that trends and progress in achieving the SDGs are accessible not only to a technical audience and policy makers, but also to the widest possible audience.
This high-level event is an opportunity for Member States, the private sector, civil society and the public to come together, share their reactions to the report and explore ways to amplify the recommendations in the lead-up to the Summit of the SDGs. This is an opportunity to reverse the trend towards urgent and accelerated action to achieve the SDGs, ensuring a better future for all.
Objective and scope
The main objectives of this high-level event are:
• Highlight the SDG 2023 Report: Special Edition Launch and discuss the latest data and recommendations on progress towards the SDGs.
• Provide a platform for leaders to share ideas and calls to action to accelerate progress towards the SDGs.
• Identify opportunities to accelerate the implementation of the SDGs, including leveraging technology and artificial intelligence to drive progress and strengthening engagement and action with stakeholders such as people with disabilities, youth, government and SDG advocates.
• Call for urgent action to reap data dividends, as data is a strategic asset for implementing the SDGs.
