A game system is a set of game mechanics working together to achieve a game result. The complexity of each system can vary depending on the needs of the game and the interaction model. These systems can be standalone gaming systems, work in conjunction with other gaming systems, or a collection of smaller gaming systems. Classic examples of game systems include things like an inventory system, crafting system, combat systems, cover systems, etc. In gamedev, systems designers are a subset of game designers, focusing on developing game mechanics. If you are experimenting with something in a game, a game system is likely at work to handle the player interaction.
