More than a dozen homes were damaged in a West Virginia community and more than 100,000 customers in the state were without power Tuesday night as a powerful storm system packing high winds, dangerous hail and the potential for destructive tornadoes swept through parts of the Ohio Valley.

At least 13 homes were damaged and some residents were injured, Kevin Walker, director of the Fayette County Office of Emergency Management in West Virginia, told CNN. The injuries were not life-threatening, Walker said.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice declared a state of emergency Tuesday for Fayette County, as well as Kanawha, Lincoln and Nicholas counties, saying the storms had caused "flooding, downed trees, power outages and road blockages."

The storm also left damage in parts of Tennessee. In the town of Sunbright, photos on social media showed buildings with roofs and facades torn off, and piles of lumber and debris littered the surrounding streets.

The first of these storms began to develop early Tuesday afternoon in parts of Missouri and Illinois.
