Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, as well as the largest urban area in Scandinavia. Stockholm extends over fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren flows into the Baltic Sea. Outside the city, to the east and along the coast, is the island chain of the Stockholm archipelago. Situated at the eastern edge of the central Swedish lowlands, Stockholm's location reflects the initial orientation of Swedish trade towards the Baltic region. More than 30% of the city's area is waterways and 30% is parks and green spaces.
