We provide a brief introduction to the subject of spintronic memory devices, which allow information to be stored in magnetization. We will explain what magnetoresistance is in magnetic multilayers and how it enables the storage of bits of information in our everyday hard drives and MRAMs. We will also retrace the discovery of magnetoresistors, and their evolution leading to giant magnetoresistors, such as magnetic tunnel junctions based on amorphous aluminum oxides and crystalline magnesium oxide.
