A large flare occurs off the Sun's limb in this image sequence, and you can see the solar prominence in the lower right. The prominences appear when relatively cooler gases from the lower layers of the solar atmosphere become trapped in a magnetic field loop that extends outward from the Sun's surface, into the hotter corona.
