Smile will study the magnetosphere, or Earth's magnetic environment, on a global scale to better understand the relationship between the Sun and Earth. To do this, it will track the solar wind, or the flow of charged particles that the Sun sends into interplanetary space, and study how these interact with the environment surrounding our planet.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences and ESA are working together on the Smile mission. The Smile payload module, which includes the scientific instruments, the equipment control unit for the payload module and the communications channel used to link all research data to Earth, is provided by the 'ESA.
