The Red Rectangle Nebula is located in the constellation Monoceros (The Unicorn), located 2,300 light years from Earth. Also known as HD 44179, the Red Rectangle Nebula was discovered during a rocket flight launched to conduct an infrared survey of the sky in 1973. As its name suggests, its structure and red color made the object of study in the fields of astronomy, physics, cosmology and astrophysics.

The geometric structures of nebulae are not common in the Milky Way, because these interstellar clouds are made of dust and gas. But the Red Rectangle Nebula appears to be an anomaly. This led to an extensive investigation by the Hubble Space Telescope and the Keck Telescope.
