Phototropism is the growth of a plant in response to a light stimulus.
Auxins (plant hormones) are synthesized in the shoot tips. In the presence of strong directional light, auxins diffuse in the opposite direction, towards the shaded side. Auxins cause cell elongation and increase the growth of meristem cells. Thus, the shaded side grows and elongates faster than the illuminated side.
