With cutting-edge technology at our fingertips and new scientific discoveries every day, why do we still have no cure for the diseases that affect so many people? Personalized genomic medicine allows us to predict and detect disease before it becomes life-threatening. Additionally, it has transformed the way scientists treat cancers and other serious genetic disorders, focusing on precise therapeutic strategies tailored to each patient, based on their unique molecular and genomic makeup. It’s about treating people as an individual rather than a collective. It gives us knowledge which, if used wisely, can lead to our well-being; the ultimate goal of the ancient Greeks known as “Ef Zin”. Originally from Lefkada, a beautiful island in Greece, Dr. Marilena Melas received her PhD in Cancer Biology and Genomics from the USC Keck School of Medicine in Los Angeles in May 2019. Currently, she is a Fellow in Genetics and Genomics of the ABMGG clinical laboratory at the Steve and Cindy Rasmussen Institute for Genomic Medicine, Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus Ohio. As a passionate and persistent scientist who loves helping people, Marilena strives to inspire others to believe in the beauty of their dreams. Her future career goal is to become director of a clinical medical genetics laboratory focused on translating genomic discoveries into clinical and therapeutic applications in the field of personalized cancer genomics. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
