The enormous amounts of data involved in modern health research cannot be managed in a single centralized database. Information and data from research, hospital data repositories and government databases must be disclosed and linked together. This raises all sorts of questions, particularly around standardization and confidentiality.

Researchers have found a way to provide access to diverse sources of health data, without sharing the data in a central database. They called it the Personal Health Train (PHT). The train takes the research question to the data rather than the data to the research question.
