How to Test and Replace an Oil Temperature Sensor; P0196 – P0197 and P0198. This sensor detects the engine oil temperature and sends this message to the ECM. At the end of the sensor is a thermistor. Resistance decreases as temperature increases. You can quickly test the sensor via a digital multimeter and a hair dryer.

P0196 – Incorrect voltage is sent to the ECM when comparing signals from other sensors, such as the coolant temperature sensor and the intake air temperature sensor.
P0197 – Low voltage; less than 0.17 V
P0198 – High voltage; greater than 4.7 V
An average reading at idle is 1.0 to 1.4 V

This vehicle happens to be a non-turbo 2010 Subaru Impreza.
