Bjorn B. Stevens, PhD, directs the Department of Atmosphere in the Earth System and the International Max Planck Research School of Earth System Modeling at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany.

Professor Stevens has published groundbreaking research papers dealing with the theory, modeling and observation of "low" clouds, which constitute one of the most important problems in meteorology and climate research.

MIT's Lorenz Center is dedicated to learning about how climate works. Named for the late MIT meteorologist Edward N. Lorenz, a pioneer of chaos theory, the Center encourages creative approaches aimed at increasing fundamental understanding.

The John Carlson Lecture communicates exciting new results in climate science to the general public. The conference is made possible by a generous gift from John H. Carlson (MIT '83) to the Lorenz Center in the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.
