Since 2018, Nuro has been delivering groceries for Kroger in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Houston. For this Domino's offering, hungry robophobes can opt for human delivery. Those who accept the robot will receive a code to enter into a screen on the robot that opens one of its two compartments so they can scoop up their melted cheese and more.
Nuro is the first autonomous vehicle company to receive an exemption from U.S. government safety standards. The move means Nuro can build autonomous delivery vehicles without features that would be required in passenger cars, such as side mirrors and windshields.
The vehicle has received an exemption from NHTSA's low-speed vehicle standards, meaning it will not be allowed to travel faster than 25 mph.
Over the next two years, Nuro will be able to deploy up to 5,000 R2 vehicles on public roads, although NHTSA is requiring Nuro to provide it with updates on the performance of its R2s and engage in community outreach in areas where the R2 will be used.
