Emmanuel S. Antonarakis, MBBCh, associate professor of oncology at Johns Hopkins Medicine, discussed the National Comprehensive Cancer Network's (NCCN) updated guidelines for genetic testing of men with prostate cancer.
Germline testing, which looks for inherited genetic mutations, and somatic testing, which looks at the genetic makeup of the tumor itself, can be helpful in making treatment decisions. According to the NCCN, any patient with high-risk metastatic or localized nonmetastatic prostate cancer should have germline testing. Additionally, men with lymph node metastases or distant metastases should have genetic testing.
