In this MWC 2021 demonstration, Qualcomm shows how 5G V2X sidelink can offload high-bandwidth data from the WAN to deliver new and improved in-vehicle experiences.
Watch Qualcomm Principal Engineer Arik Gubeskys explain how a 5G V2X sidelink offloads the network to deliver higher bandwidth map data using a local roadside unit (RSU).
With map data, the driver has a real-time 3D map with local landmarks and information about potential road hazards. These 5G V2X sidelink technologies enhance autonomous driving capabilities and improve road safety.
Watch a 5G V2X equipped vehicle accurately display the direction to take as it approaches a local landmark. Meanwhile, from a distance, another passing vehicle notices a stopped truck that acts as a roadblock and potential hazard. The passing vehicle transfers this information to a mapping server that then relays it to a local road unit, alerting the other vehicle using a 5G V2X sidelink that triggers an update to the navigation instructions.
With timely updated instructions, our vehicle can change lanes efficiently, avoiding roadblocks. This allows the vehicle to continue to its destination without any obstacles or delays.
Qualcomm is working to create innovative technology that will enable vehicles to communicate with each other and everything around them, providing 360-degree vision without line-of-sight and a higher level of predictability for improved road safety and autonomous driving.
