#climatechange is a term we hear a lot. But what is it and how is it modeled? #scicomm #stock market #weather #model

When we need to study something in science that is too large or too complex to use easily, we often make a model of it in order to recreate it in a simpler way.

You may not realize it, but we use models all the time in our everyday lives. They can be static and representative, like the New York subway map – or they can be used to make predictions about dynamic systems, like weather forecasts or the ups and downs of the stock market.

Even our understanding of climate change, a phenomenon on the tip of every tongue, relies on predictions made by a model.

The Global Climate Model, also known as the GCM, is an extremely complex system. It is so complicated that its calculations require the work of several supercomputers located around the world.
