Why do we wear sunglasses in the first place? Basically there are two reasons. On the one hand, they protect our eyes from bright light and UV rays. On the other hand, they add personal style and a touch of flair to our outfits.

How did we come up with sunglasses to begin with?

If you go back in history you will see that people wore ivory bone glasses with a small slit so the snow wouldn't look so bright in their eyes. If you look at the Romans in ancient China, they used smoky quartz or stones to filter the light that reached their eyes.

In 1752, someone added tinted lenses to eyeglass frames. In 1936, polarized lenses first appeared and they filtered polarizing light from horizontal surfaces so there was less sparking. In the 1980s, the top gun appeared and everyone wanted aviator sunglasses.

So what are sunglasses for? First, they darken the light that hits your face. Second, they filter UVA and UVB rays. Ideally, sunglasses should have a UV400 label as it filters out the maximum amount present in sunglasses.

Cheap lenses often suffer from visual distortion. A higher quality lens has more contrast and usually has a better scratch-resistant coating. Probably the best sunglasses lenses on the market today come from Zeiss.

Bausch and Lomb also had very high quality lenses and you can usually recognize them by a small BL on the side of the sunglasses. They were actually purchased by RayBan and today the quality has suffered. Another quality lens manufacturer is Randolph Engineering, the ones I'm wearing here and they often come with polarized lenses and the colors come out very well.

One thing that is very popular these days is polarized lenses on sunglasses. This means that light reflected from a horizontal surface such as water or a highway is filtered. So when you look through something and you look at the sea, you don't see these sparks of water, you just see a flat surface. .

So how should sunglasses fit? They should cover your eyes and sit as close to your eyes as possible.

Next, let's talk about sunglasses materials. Today, 95% of sunglasses are injection molded and made from plastic. They are not very durable and also look cheap.

A much better version is acetate. First, you create a whole block which is then cut into sheets from which the sunglasses are made. Acetate can be very clear, have nice highlights and you'll never get that with injection molding. They are also hand polished.

Metal sunglasses are especially nice in very hot weather because the frame always looks cooler, but of course there are different materials. Very lightweight options include titanium alloys, you can have nickel alloys.

A luxury material for sunglasses is real water buffalo horn. It's a wonderful material because not only does it feel great, but it also adapts to your body temperature so it's never too hot or too cold. Water buffalo horn is not very flexible, so it is only used in personalized or custom-made sunglasses.

Next up is the turtle shell. At the time, it was made from a real turtle. Today, it is illegal to use turtle shell to make real products, however, if you can prove that the turtle shell is from before 1973 and you have the appropriate certificates. , you can still use them.

In recent years, wood has been introduced into the sunglasses market. For me, it doesn't work on my temples, on my skin, and I much prefer acetate or horn. Additionally, most wooden sunglasses today are made in China.

Sunglasses do’s and don’ts:

1. You should never look directly at sunlight as it hurts your eyes.
2. Don't wear sunglasses at night unless you have a medical condition, as it makes you look like you're trying too hard.
3. Take off your sunglasses indoors.
4. If you're going for a classic look, avoid white sunglasses because there's too much contrast and it looks weird.
5. Avoid wearing sunglasses with any type of formal attire such as black tie or white tie.
6. Invest in a pair of sunglasses that fit your face.

Ultimately, you should always buy the best type of sunglasses materials and lenses that you can afford.
