When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the healthcare industry turned to telemedicine to meet patient needs. Every digital health company, every hospital, and every insurer faces the same two obstacles: the need for more doctors and better technology infrastructure. Even major virtual care players like Teladoc Health and Amwell experienced long wait times as patient demand far outpaced physician supply in those early weeks and months.

Michelle Davey was ready. At Wheel, based in Austin, Texas, co-founder and CEO Davey had already been building this back-end infrastructure for years, both on the technology side and the network of doctors and nurses. “Wheel’s vision is really about expanding access,” says Davey, 32. “It’s about connecting patients to the care that’s right for them, when they need it most.
