Margarita is the Spanish word for daisy, so it is likely that the Margarita comes from the Daisy family of cocktails. The original Daisy from the 1870s consisted of alcohol, citrus, orange syrup, gum syrup, and seltzer served over ice. A Tequila Daisy, made with tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and soda water, was just a few steps away from a Margarita.
