For six centuries, history painting – images based on stories drawn from myths, scriptures, and ancient and modern history – was the most prestigious work a painter could produce. Renaissance artists and writers established the definitions, goals and rules. We describe them and examine many examples of how they changed as the pictorial narrative evolved until its eclipse in the 19th century.
