The Planetary Science Institute is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation dedicated to the exploration of the solar system. It is headquartered in Tucson, Arizona, where it was founded in 1972. In 2016, PSI opened a second office in Lakewood, Colorado (near Denver).
PSI scientists and teachers participate in numerous NASA and international missions, studying Mars, Earth and other planets, the Moon, asteroids, comets, interplanetary dust, physics impacts, the origin of the solar system, the formation of extrasolar planets, dynamics, the rise of life and other areas of research. They carry out field work on every continent on Earth to understand our planet and others. They are also actively involved worldwide in science education and public awareness through school programs, children's books, popular science books, podcasts and artwork.
