The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a rare glimpse of a massive star, 15,000 light-years away, releasing a halo of gas and dust into interstellar space, creating the building blocks of new stars, planets and life.

The star, called WR 124, is a Wolf-Rayet star that has lost an amount of material equivalent to 10 suns and has a mass 30 times that of our sun. Webb's infrared instruments detected thermal emissions from the gas and dust, which are difficult to see with observatories that detect visible light. The luminous cloud of gas and dust surrounding WR 124 stretches a whopping 10 light-years across.

The discovery is important to astronomers because it provides insight into the origins of cosmic dust, which plays a critical role in the functioning of the universe. Dust provides shelter for stars to form, helps form planets, and serves as a platform for the formation and aggregation of molecules, including the building blocks of life on Earth.

Webb's massive size and sensitive instruments should provide insights into how dust forms in the universe, particularly in hard-to-observe environments like Wolf-Rayet stars. Observations of Wolf-Rayet stars could also tell astronomers about similar stars in the early universe shortly after the Big Bang.

After more than 20 years of design, development, assembly and testing, the James Webb Space Telescope was launched on December 25, 2021, and arrived in operational orbit nearly 1.6 million kilometers from Earth about a month later. The $10 billion mission is a joint project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency.
