The mass airflow sensor measures the volume of air entering your car or truck's engine. If airflow is reduced due to a dirty air filter, if air measurement is incorrect or inconsistent due to a faulty sensor, if a throttle body is sticking, or if a leaking intake plenum is leaking, your engine may be wasting fuel to compensate!
