Nuclear fission is a process in which the nucleus of an atom splits into two or more smaller nuclei, creating different elements. During this process, the atom's neutrons are equally distributed between the 2+ new elements, but not all are stable enough in the new elements. And the mass of neutrons is converted into energy which can be calculated by Einstein's equation, E=mc2 where E = energy, m = mass and c = the speed of light which is about 300 million meters per second. Once this is squared as the formula dictates, it is a massive number and is why such a small mass of 1 gram can produce approximately 90 trillion joules of energy.
This process is fundamental to nuclear physics and plays a crucial role in nuclear power production and nuclear weapons which I will discuss in future short films. But let's start by going deeper into the mechanism of nuclear fission.
