Medical alert devices (#medicalalertsystem) can call first responders such as emergency medical technicians, police or firefighters to a user's home. But these devices, also called personal emergency response systems, are not all the same.
Some are also large, while others fit your wrist. Some only work when you're at home, while others will protect you wherever you go…and follow you every step of the way.
Basically, a medical alert system (#medicalalertsystem) communicates with professionals who can send help, so they all need a microphone and speaker. Cheaper versions use your phone line, while more advanced units use cellular networks.
You don't need cell service or a cell phone to use the wireless ones. But you need a landline to use the ones that work over a phone line.
Using a medical alert system (#medicalalertsystem) is different from calling 911. With fall detection, many medical alert systems (#medicalalertsystem) can call for help even if you can't!
Many systems offer an optional pendant with a built-in accelerometer. When it registers a quick deposit, the service will call you to make sure everything is okay. If you don't respond, because you knocked yourself out for example, help will come.
Medical alert systems are therefore not only reactive. They can also be proactive. In fact, some may call you every day just to make sure you're okay or send you reminders to take your medications. Can your 911 do this? Besides connecting via cellular and landline, many medical alert systems can be divided into two categories: those that operate only in the home, which include all landline systems, and those that operate outside the home. There's even one designed to work in your car!
Residential units come with pendants that can extend the range up to 1,300 feet from the base, so they can operate in your yard, if you have one. So for these to work effectively, they need to be on you at all times when you are awake. But some can be worn as a wristwatch. And fashion-conscious seniors can hide the pendant behind jewelry.
Thanks to modern technology, entire medical alert systems (#medicalalertsystem) are now being reduced into portable, portable units. Some allow the use of pendants, while others do. They work anywhere there is a cellular signal, including inside your home, and can be used to locate you. Batteries need to be recharged but some last up to 30 days!
When you press the button on these systems, you are connected to an agent. You could tell them you don't feel well and send an ambulance. You could tell them you heard a window break and send the police. If you suspect a fire, they will send the fire brigade.
