For emergency vehicle drivers, it is becoming increasingly difficult to reach the scene of the incident as quickly as possible. Thus, emergency vehicles are allowed to use special rights, for example in an emergency, breaking red lights or driving faster than the speed limit. This is why driving an emergency vehicle is a physically and mentally demanding task. The driver must anticipate the reaction of other road users and decide whether it is safe to use their special rights.

To assist emergency vehicle drivers, an intelligent traffic management concept was evaluated in this research study. This is why the optimal green times of a traffic light control will be calculated to provide a green wave to emergency vehicles. The main idea was to define green phases long enough to allow the emergency vehicle and traffic ahead to pass through the intersection. In addition, the negative impact on other road users must be minimized. The concept was simulated with the SUMO traffic simulation with different traffic scenarios. The results show that emergency vehicle travel times could be reduced while the impact on other road users is relatively low.
