Chord progression breakdown:
I wind miner, bVI, bIII, bVII
In C minor: C minor, Ab major, Eb major, Bb major
This progression moves counterclockwise around the soundboard, giving it a unique backwards feel. It's not only prevalent in video games, but also in movies and pop songs.
Tips for Mastery:
Practice in all keys: Be comfortable playing this progression in all keys.
Melody Creation: Write as many melodies as possible that fit this progression.
Countermelodies: Experiment by creating countermelodies. We'll show you how we used a choir sample for ours.
Thematic Response: Create a response to your theme using a progression that returns to the I minor chord. For example, a plagal cadence followed by a bII at V7sus4.
In C minor: Fm, Cm, Db major, G7sus4, G7, Cm
Accompaniment Patterns: Harmonize in thirds to create a rhythmic pattern that drives your theme.
We'll go deeper into MIDI orchestration in future videos, so be sure to subscribe!
